Full-time Experienced Migrant Rights Community Organiser to start mid-fall
The opportunity
Parkdale Community Legal Services (PCLS) seeks an experienced migrant rights organiser to work in our Migrant Rights Division. The position involves the supervision of law students in their involvement in community organising, especially relating to migrant rights issues and immigration law.
About PCLS
PCLS works to tackle social injustice through a combination of community development, organising, action, and legal representation. PCLS is also a teaching clinic for Osgoode Hall Law School and law students, supervised by PCLS staff, are our primary caseworkers. We work with low-income people in a diverse community on the west side of Toronto. Our particular areas of focus include: housing and homelessness; immigration and migrant rights; workers’ rights; social assistance, violence, and health; and, issues of poverty and social exclusion. PCLS is committed to advancing racial and social-economic justice.
Summary of work areas
- Develop, coordinate, and implement campaigns and organising on migrant rights issues
- Monitor immigration and related policy and practices
- Work with migrants to identify and develop opportunities for policy input with government and advocacy organisations, including those who are undocumented or have precarious immigration status
- Develop and maintain relationships with community members and community partners
- Organise and coordinate meetings and community forums
- Leadership development
- Develop appropriate educational and social media tools
- Supervise law students in their involvement in community organising
Qualifications and Experience
- Demonstrated knowledge of immigration and refugee policies and issues facing migrants
- Demonstrated experience working with migrant and low-income communities to identify issues, develop and organise community campaigns involving, and led by, people directly affected
- Demonstrated experience supporting leadership development and building capacity centering racialized communities, women, migrants, and marginalised communities
- Proven ability to conduct outreach and communicate effectively with diverse communities
- Experience facilitating meetings, delivering training, and making presentations using clear and accessible language
- Ability to develop and write appropriate policy submissions, campaign and organising materials
- Demonstrated ability to work independently and collectively
- Supervisory experience
Compensation and Benefits
This is a unionized position, and the compensation and benefits are in accordance with the collective agreement. The salary range for this position is between $76,962.23 and $90,274.80.
Successful applicant will also receive up to 26 paid vacation/extra holidays days off and paid time off between the dates of December 26th and January 1st.
The compensation package includes a comprehensive health and dental benefits package and a defined benefit pension plan (DBplus CAAT).
